Apple Crumb Pie

Apple Crumb Pie
Adapted from Sally's Baking Addiction

1 pie crust (homemade or premade, no judging)
5 large apples (cored, peeled, and sliced into 1/4-inch slices)

1 tablespoon lemon juice (or vinegar)
1/4 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 and 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 cup white sugar (or brown sugar, lightly packed)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Crumb Topping
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup flour
1/3 cup unsalted butter (melted and slightly cooled)

To make the pie:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

In a large bowl using a rubber spatula or wooden spoon, stir the apples, lemon juice, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla extract together until thoroughly combined. Set filling aside.

Roll out the pie dough onto a round pie dish. Tuck it in with your fingers, making sure it is smooth. Flute the edges.

Spoon the apple filling into the crust.

To make the crumb topping:

Combine brown sugar, cinnamon, flour, and butter in a medium bowl. Mix until resembles thick crumbs. Sprinkle mixture on top of pie.

Place the pie onto a large baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Keeping the pie in the oven, turn the temperature down to 375 degrees and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes. After the first 20 minutes of bake time, place a pie crust shield (or foil strips) on top of the edges of the pie to prevent them from browning too quickly.

Allow the pie to cool before serving.
